American Indian Students Soar at Annual Youth Summit

Albuquerque, NM - Futures for Children Youth Leadership groups from locations like Gallup, Santo Domingo, Chinle, AZ and Pinon, AZ will gather on March 5th, 2005 at the annual Youth Summit.

100 American Indian students will meet at the Futures for Children Learning Center, 8:30 to 5:00 pm, March 5, at 9600 Tennyson St NE in Albuquerque for educational workshops and activities designed to enhance leadership skills, and to celebrate accomplishments.

�These students are incredibly committed to making a difference in their communities,� said Keith Slim-Tolagai, Youth Leadership class of 1986 and Team Leader at Futures for Children. �At each Summit their energy, passion and desire to positively shape their future and that of their communities is inspiring.�

The Youth Leadership Summit goal is to motivate young American Indians to share excellence in leadership, the community service they have performed and to demonstrate increased self-esteem. Student groups share presentations on successful service projects completed within the past year.

2005 YL Summit highlights include team building through low and high ropes courses, the Soaring Eagle Singers of Bernalillo High School, and presentation of Youth Leadership Student of the Year Awards.

Futures for Children, a non-profit organization head-quartered in Albuquerque brings educational resources and opportunities to American Indian students to improve their quality of education. Youth Leadership is one element of the program Futures for Children delivers to Navajo, Hopi and NM Pueblo tribal communities. For more than 35 years Futures for Children has motivated over 12,000 American Indian students to stay in school and graduate through innovative mentoring and training.
